Seeking “Mr. Right” Among Richard Armitage’s Varied Character Roles, 9/14/11 GratianaDS90 (Post # 14)

Getting back to the notion that there are women in the world—or at least of my acquaintance—who are still seeking their Mr. Right (see my blog post #2, “Late bloomers for love can and do bloom”:  https://gratianads90.wordpress.com/2011/08/27/late-bloomers-for-love-can-and-do-bloom-82711/ ).   Let’s continue that discussion of what women want in a man for their love relationship–but with a twist, by examining the characters portrayed by Richard Armitage and identifying the “finer” qualities that we want in our man.   Hey, we have to know what we want and what we’re looking for in Mr. Right if we have a hope of actually finding Mr. Right.

I should, perhaps, segue momentarily to aver and acknowledge once more that I am blessed with my ideal man in my hubby—as my recent poems I’ve posted here attest to.  My hubby is “my” Mr. Right.  But, that doesn’t mean that I can’t dream along with you—Ha!—especially when it concerns our favorite fella, Mr. Richard Crispin Armitage.

So, let’s think about that, shall we?  What qualities will our Mr. Right have? I will give you my impressions of the qualities I admire in some of Mr. Armitage’s roles—as being Mr. Right worthy– to start each discussion thread off and then you may comment with your own thoughts where you like.  I’m just taking the roles in chronological order.  And I’ve numbered them because as we comment the discussion threads will get out of order.  Which character–or amalgam of character traits–would you like to see in your ideal man and Mr. Right?

Cheers!  Gratiana  ;->

P.S.  Thanks to RANet (www.richardarmitagenet.com) for their wonderful media resources and news related to Richard Armitage.

P. S.  You might ask, why didn’t Grati include Ian Macalwain or John Mulligan or Lee Richards, or Paul Andrews in the list?  Well, I haven’t seen those programs yet.  But do start their discussion threads if you want to.

1) John Standring/Sparkhouse (2002) — He is loyal, steadfast, all around a nice bloke as I mentioned in my blog post #4 (https://gratianads90.wordpress.com/2011/08/29/speaking-of-decent-loving-kind-steadfast-and-reliable-blokes-i-suggest-john-standring-in-sparkhouse-82911/).  Not to be confused with a Saint Bernard—though “he” is a big bear of a man—John Standring is warm and cuddly.   And you and John can learn together the “finer points of loving”, shall we say.  Because his first effort with Carol “Tweren’t brilliant”.  But, everyone improves with time, practice, and trusting in their love partner.  So, John can only go up from here.  Ha!

2) John Thornton/North & South (2004) — At first blush, he seems imperious and arrogant.  But it is only a veneer of hardness that encapsulates John’s loving heart waiting to be opened.  And when John’s heart opens to Margaret, he loves her with a “foolish passion” that will prove to be wise.  A fair man to his workers, Thornton monumentally misconstrues the situation with Margaret’s brother–and he treats her unfairly due to his hurt feelings.  However, though Thornton  believes Margaret to be in love with this other man, he still protects her–even though he has no hope of having her in his life.  So John is strong, caring, and selfless.  He will always put your interests above his own.  Life with Thornton would be a grand passion.  (In fact, the GratianaDS90 signature I created for my blog is of our favorite kissing scene from North and South:  https://gratianads90.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/lovelivesinour-heartsaug3011revrev.pdf )

3) Sir Guy of Gisborne /Robin Hood (2006 – 2009) — A man whose “entourage” is the castle garrison needs no introduction.  Sir Guy’s swagger, smirk, sensuous gaze, and seductive bad boy charm should have won him the heart of Lady Marian with one rustle of his black leather mantle.  But the show was called “Forrest Boy”, not “Leather Man”.  C’est la vie.  And Guy’s redemption from opportunistic social climber bent on reclaiming his position to esteemed champion would be a monumental project–one that Lady Marian only half heartedly undertook.  (See my post # 9, Sir Guy:  Broken Path, Broken Man:  https://gratianads90.wordpress.com/2011/09/04/sir-guy-of-gisborne-broken-path-broken-man-90211-post-9-rebuilt-90411/)  But oh, what a man!  Though if Sir Guy couldn’t be “reformed”, he would make a very nice “Mr. Right Now.”  Ha!

4) Claude Monet/ The Impressionists (2006)– A brilliant artist whose true genius was only fully appreciated after his death, Claude and his fellow impressionists revolutionized how we look at art.  And his private life was just as unconventional–loving freely and honorably, only bedding his hoped for second wife after she is free to love again.  How many men would love deeply and love chastely?  How many women could for that matter?  But a true and deep love sometimes requires a sacrifice before it can fully flower.  So, life with Claude would be beautiful, stimulating, and anticipatory.  But some things are worth waiting for.

5) Harry Kennedy/ The Vicar of Dibley (2006) — Who wouldn’t want to cut to the chase and get to their third date–kissing with tongues–with the playful Harry?  Tall, dark, and handsome, uncomplicated, and comfortably employed–since he bought that cottage for 500,000 pounds.  What is not to like?  Well, maybe those horizontally striped sweaters.  Ha!  Harry instantly falls in love with Gerry for her effervescence and humor–so he has good taste.  And he’s not afraid to be with a strong woman–Gerry–admiring and supporting her and not being jealous of her.  The song “I’m just wild about Harry” keeps playing in my mind.  Life with Harry will be loving, supportive, and fun.

6) Lucas North/ Spooks (2008-2010)– Eight years locked away in a prison–with only his tattoos to call his own?  Lucas needs loving and tender care like no other.  Not a “project” like Sir Guy.  But Lucas is definitely in need  of a woman to call his own. Though the Sarah girl was grating, we saw some of Richard’s most smouldering looks as Lucas come to the forefront–as when he asks her what they should do next as they wait for confirmation on something.  Sarah asks “next”?  to which Lucas replies, “Well, for the next several hours.”  Thornton may have burst ovaries around the world, but Lucas made us all wish we could bring “the spy in from the cold”.  Ha!  We’d warm him up with a hot toddy, and such.  And the element of danger is very sexy.

7) John Porter/Strike Back (2010)– A man with guns!   And I don’t mean the kind that requires a FOID card.  Ha!    Porter’s is another redemptive story–but this redemption he effects on his own.  Don’t we love a calm, confident, and captive freeing fellow?  Porter to the rescue–be it a hostage crisis or the dishwasher leaking on the nice kitchen wood floor!  And he is resolute in his purpose, but willing to be talked out of killing you if you reason with him.  What a guy!  Ha!  (See my post # 13, Strike Back’s John Porter, Man of Honor:  https://gratianads90.wordpress.com/2011/09/12/strike-backs-john-porter-man-of-honor-91211-gratianads90-post-13/ ).  Life would be an adventure with Porter–requiring passports, sunscreen (he obviously used a lot since he didn’t tan in the dessert), and strategically hidden objects.  Just don’t expect to hide his birthday gift from him because he would have bugged your home the week before and listened in as you wondered out loud where to hide it.  And of course, he would act surprised when he opened his gift–night vision goggles, just what every covert operative needs.

8) Thorin Oakenshield/The Hobbit (2012 & 2013)– I know, he’s an expat–King Under the Mountain of the House of Durin in exile.  But what he lacks in wealth, he makes up for in spirit.  Fierce and regal–a Lion in Summer, not in Winter–Thorin is a leader of men, well, Dwarves and one Hobbit.  And as a leader he knows how to command and to delegate.  But the question is, does he pick up after himself  around the house?  Or does he leave his sword Orchrist, his fur coat, his armoured vest, and his knuckle rings lying around your dwelling as if he were doing a Gypsy Rose Lee strip tease act, as he walks in your door.  Sorry, I digress, my husband does that with his photo equipment.  Ha!  But seriously, with all of those layers of hair, beard, extra nose piece (And Richard’s nose wasn’t beautifully noble and big enough already?  Have The Hobbit makeup people not seen his real nostrils flare impressively?), battle gear, and clothing.  God’s Teeth, Thorin would have to be astoundingly strong to cart all of that battle quest gear around.    If you could stand the separation when he has to go off on a quest again (see my post # 8, Thorin and his Buddies: https://gratianads90.wordpress.com/2011/09/01/thorin-and-his-buddies-90111-post-8/), then you’re the girl for him.  (See my post #11 revised Thorin’s Hope–A Love Story:  https://gratianads90.wordpress.com/2011/09/08/thorins-hope-a-love-story-by-gratianads90-aka-lynne-grace-90811-post-11/)

About Gratiana Lovelace

Gratiana Lovelace is my nom de plume for my creative writing and blogging. I write romantic stories in different sub genres. The stories just tumble out of me. My resurgence in creative writing occurred when I viewed the BBC miniseries of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel North & South in February 2010. The exquisitely talented British actor portraying the male lead John Thornton in North & South--Richard Crispin Armitage--became my unofficial muse. I have written over 50 script stories about love--some are fan fiction, but most are original stories--that I am just beginning to share with others on private writer sites, and here on my blog. And as you know, my blog here is also relatively new--since August 2011. But, I'm having fun and I hope you enjoy reading my blog essays and my stories. Cheers! Grati ;-> upd 12/18/11

Hmmm, even though I love Sir Guy on paper, he would be hell to pay as Mr. Right. So, I’m torn between John Standring and John Thornton. JS is very dependable but I wonder if he’s so plodding and shy as to be a bit dull. With JT, he is also dependable under his gruff and I suspect he has a lot of worldly experience to share with Ms. Right. Just my 3 cents worth at a very late hour. :)

      Hi Judiang!
Ha! I love your assessment of Sir Guy. He is definitely “high maintenance”. But what’s a girl to do when his baby blues and stubble come near?

As to John Standring? Dullness or shyness can sometimes be cultivated into a warmth and cheerfulness. I’m the original “draw the person out of their shell” gal. If someone is at an event or party and sitting by themselves, I make a beeline to them to help them feel a part of things and welcome–even if its not my event or party. Ha! Maybe it’s because I’m sometimes shy and I recognize that in others.

I think you’re right with John Thornton. His keen and inquiring mind–such as continuing his interrupted school studies with Mr. Hale–reflects the spirit of a “life long learner” as we label it in higher ed. And JT is downright dashing to boot.

      Cheers! Gratiana ;->

Brilliant, gratiana! Half of me was dissolving in giggles; the other half was saying “Yes, right on”!! What choices. Oh dear.

John Thornton, I think. He does have an enquiring mind: Plato, new mill equipment, keeping his workers healthy, learning from Margaret and Higgins…No doubt, although only a woman with the spirit of Miss Hale could hold his interest, he would occasionally come over all Victorian domineering paterfamilias – but that would just make life with interesting and challanging. :D

    Hi Gratiana,
Perhaps we already meet us in friends blogs (Calexora, Bcc, Servetus), but today I found your blog. Your writing is enjoyable and engaging, and I’ll read it whenever possible. I do not speak English, so I apologize for my errors in comments.

      Hi Ana,
Yes, I’ve seen your comments on the other ladies blogs. I’m relatively new to blogging–about a month. BccMee urged me to start–bless her!

Thanks for your kind remarks about my essays. I’m glad you’re finding them enjoyable. I am pleasantly surprised that people seem to connect with what my essays. I don’t pretend to be an expert on RA. Though, like many of us, I could pass a very detailed quiz about him and his career. Ha!

And bless your heart for being multi lingual. My high school and college French is very rusty at this point. Your English is just fine among friends. And if you want to make a comment in your native language because you feel it “fits” better–as one French Canadian friend told me–go ahead. I’ll just paste your comments into Google Translate to find out what your saying and then reply to you. Isn’t technology wonderful?

Again, thanks for visiting my little blog and commenting. Have great day!

    Hi Fitzg!
Thanks for your kind comments. Humor is my fall back postion in all things. Ha! Who knows! Maybe I’m striving to be the Erma Bombeck of Richard Armitage commentary–“Life is always greener over the … sepia toned portraits of Guy”. Ha!

And as to John Thornton being a spirited choice for our lover and soulmate? Definitely! I’ve never been so enamored of a man in a stiff cravat as I am with Mr. Armitage’s portrayal of John Thornton-especially when he takes that cravat off and we see his neck.

Thank goodness my hubby just left for the day so I don’t have to feel sheepish about my girlish giggling about RA. Ha! But, my hubby doesn’t mind if RA provides a little … inspiration. Ha!

Thanks for reading. Cheers! Grati ;->

P.S. A “reply” button didn’t appear below your post. So that’s why this comment isn’t attached to it.

    Hi Gratiana,
I think your blog is a success because you echo the thoughts of many of us with so many sensibility, lightness, and it’s very well written (BTW I have learned lots of new words here). :)
What a lovely task to imagine how could be my Mr. Right! I decided to make a “blend” with these wondeful RA’s characters, if you allow me:
    John Standring – loyalty
    John Thornton – gentlemanliness
    Sir Guy – sex appeal
    Monet – “joie de vivre”
    Harry Kennedy – sweetness
    Lucas North – intelligence
    John Porter – courage
(I couldn’t leave out) The Man Himself – humor
P.S.: Our poor husbands have to be very, very understanding, haven’t they? Well, they know RA will never knock at our door, it’s only matter of dreams! LOL

I appreciate your kind words. I think we RA fans are a tight knit group of friends. So, it seems reasonable that we would have some opinions in common. Though I”m quite flattered by individuals liking my essays. Who knew? Ha!

And Mr. Armitage is the ultimate “Mr. Right”. I was going to post my thoughts about that later, but your comment gave me the opener to address it now. Whomever is lucky enough to capture Mr. Armitage’s heart will be a very lucky lady indeed. He has all of the qualities that you and I and the other commenters mentioned and more. How do we know? We get a glimpse of the “real” Mr. Armitage from his live interviews (and his consistency in that persona, though when on camera one is always a bit more guarded) and in his candid interview moments. He is always kind, respectful, and articulate and passionate about his artistic endeavors. And I would add that Mr. Armitage is a gentleman and a gentle man–my highest recommendation for anyone. And, he seems to have a penchant for his petite costars if we were to judge by escorting them to events and some of his “friendly” waist holding of Julie Graham (Alona) and the actress who played Dani–and these ladies blinding grins at being on his arm. A phrase in the U.S. is that the ladies’ facial expressions looked like “the cat that ate the canary”–meaning, they looked very pleased and happy with being with Mr. Armitage. Well, who wouldn’t be happy with the delightful Mr. Armitage as their consort? And Mr. Armitage? He always looks gentlemanly and not “leering”–because as he says himself about his shyness with regard to being private about his love life he “doesn’t put it about.” Handsome, charming, kind, respectful, and discreet. Sighhhh! Perfect!

      Cheers! Grati ;->

P.S. The reason I like that Mr. Armitage seems to prefer his “petite” costars is that I am also petite. But, my wonderful and wonderfully tall hubby got to me first. Sorry Richard. Ha!

    Hi Gratiana,
I think my list to the Mr. Right comes down to two or three things: being a man, who I love him and he loves me! But these three items involve numerous qualities, virtues, abstractions that make extensive list and changing with each new phase of my life. Some aspects remain. Being a man, involves not only the genre defined by the biological characteristics, but mainly involves emotional and psychological characteristics of a man. This definition is confusing because over the generations have lost the references for what is to be a man and what is to be a woman. My definition includes the definitions of gentleman of Margaretand Man of Mr. Thornton. It also covers features such as protector, provider and virility, which brings courage, strength and fullness. My ideal man isn’t a boy; he is foremost a warrior. I love him, it sounds simple, but it is not. The right man takes first my mind, then my heart and finally the animal instincts. He has to provoke in me a profound admiration, which arises from the observation of his intelligence, his humor, his courage to face life’s difficulties. My Mr. Right is a hero not because he is perfect and win the bad guys, but because he seeks to win yourself and fight for a higher ideal. Finally, he loves me, it seems logical, but is not. Few men and women have the willingness to truly love. Each one has its own definition of love. My definition involves self-giving, acceptance and loyalty to each other and himself; and a willingness to continue to grow and evolve together. I find all these features in several characters of RA, the darkest to the most sunlight.

In fact, I’m torn between Mr. Thornton and Harry Kennedy. JT because I love his constancy in the affections, honesty, diligence, and of course his mind, his open mind (his wisdom, although I feel that in a book is better shown). Only, he is so engrossed in work :(
And Harry because he has a great sense of humor and listens to the voice of his heart ;-)

      Hi Ania!

Why not have both qualities that you admire in your sweetheart? These character traits are not mutually exclusive. People are multifaceted and I think that the hard driven businessman in JT–which seems to be mirroring Mr. Armitage’s career focus at the moment–and the fun loving nature of Harry can coexist in one person.

Let’s just hope that Mr. Armitage takes time to “stop and smell the roses” given his prolific body of work to date in a variety of media–tv, film documentaries, adverts, audiobooks, etc. The man is constantly in motion career wise. Mr. Armitage might just need a good, kind, and loving woman to gently take him by the hand and caringly whisper to him: “Richard Dear, Please take a respite for a while. Let us live, love, and laugh together. Enjoy yourself and then you can return to your artisitic projects refreshed and reinvigorated–ready for new endeavors.” Oh, and by he way, ladies? The line forms behind me. Ha!

I love your shaggy Standring description. Priceless!
I am curious though, since I don’t text and miss out on some abbreviations. What does S.O. refer to? Ha!

P.S. This post seems to have quite a few followers long after I posted it. For me, I keep thinking back to the “unknown” characterization of Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit that we well see a year from now–I am breathless with anticipation. Thorin is dangerous/sexy, fierce/sexy, warrior like/sexy, sings songs/sexy, and at least with CGI, more my height so I could reach his lips for a kiss without needing a step ladder. Ha!
