North & South: John Thornton’s Loving Thoughts about Margaret Hale at the Masters’ Dinner, 3/28/12 Gratiana Lovelace (Post #156)

Sometimes a gaze or a facial expression can convey more than words.  So it is with Richard Armitage’s subtley nuanced portrayal of John Thornton during the Masters’ Dinner Scene in North & South as John gazes upon the woman he loves, Margaret Hale.  And if John could share his thoughts with us, perhaps they might be something like this:

She is here, Margaret.   I knew that she would come tonight.  But yet her coming now is more than my imagining–for her loveliness is as bewitching as her smile is sincerely compassionate.  She has no equal in intellect and spirit and beauty.  What a woman!  She is a consort for a king in her pale blue satin gown with delicate lace trimmings where my lips would trace my growing love for her in kisses were we alone and in our marriage bed.

Could she but know my heart is hers?  Would she give her heart to mine?  I would adore her all my days and seek only to bring her happiness and joy, as she will bring happiness and joy to me.   And in time, our love would give us children to care for and guide through life.  Oh if only my wishes were dreams that I could fulfill through force of will, I would.

Were I as bold in love as I am in business, I would write you a letter relating my tender feelings to you:

My Darling Margaret,

I hold dear the moments we are together–even when others are present as tonight and I can not speak my love for you out loud.  My Margaret, I cling to the hope that you will see me as I see you, my love.  My heart is open to your heart, for I will have no other love reside there but you. I have no wants or desires but you.

I love you with a passion and tenderness that I did not know I could feel until you brought me into to life from merely existing.    You have changed me forever with my love for you.  I have glimpsed paradise on Earth in your caring eyes and loving smile.  I can not breathe without wanting to gaze upon your serenely lovely countenance, to feel your calming presence, to hear the unwavering kindness in your voice, and to feel the soothing touch of your hand in mine.

My Margaret, could your feelings correspond in any way to mine?  For you alone can make me whole and my life complete.  For your love, I will live in hope until the end of my days.  And if my loving you is all that I am to have, then so be it.   I will not reproach you for not returning my affections.

But if you do care for me, love me, I will love and cherish you as long as we both shall live.  No other woman will ever be as loved as I love you.

Please tell me of your heart, my love.   My heart awaits your answer.

For I am yours forever, John

About Gratiana Lovelace

Gratiana Lovelace is my nom de plume for my creative writing and blogging. I write romantic stories in different sub genres. The stories just tumble out of me. My resurgence in creative writing occurred when I viewed the BBC miniseries of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel North & South in February 2010. The exquisitely talented British actor portraying the male lead John Thornton in North & South--Richard Crispin Armitage--became my unofficial muse. I have written over 50 script stories about love--some are fan fiction, but most are original stories--that I am just beginning to share with others on private writer sites, and here on my blog. And as you know, my blog here is also relatively new--since August 2011. But, I'm having fun and I hope you enjoy reading my blog essays and my stories. Cheers! Grati ;-> upd 12/18/11

    Good morning Grati,
    Very beautiful and romantic! I love that dinner party scene, his lips are speaking one thing but the eyes deliver another completely different message.
    It’s amazing how much Mr. Armitage can say only with his eyes and facial expressions. Last Sunday I was rewatching my favorite N&S scenes and was once more mesmerized by his performance. In the book we read many of Mr. Thornton’s thoughts, in the miniseries it’s all written in RA’s face. There is a word to this: pure and absolute TALENT.

    Hi Grati,
    I love your John’s letter to Margaret. ♥ Oh, indeed Richard Armitage is a master at using his micro expression.

    • Hi Ania,
      Thanks for your kind note. I agree with you. Richard Armitage brought the story of North & South to vibrant life with his searing and nuanced portrayal of the honorable John Thornton maintaining his human decency and values in times of adversity–and John finally finding and knowing the exquisite joy of love that is shared with his beloved Margaret, as beautifully portrayed by Daniela Denby-Ashe. Sighhhhh!
      Cheers! Grati ;->

    So difficult for Thornton to play the courting swain in person! But thoughts are powerful. And actions more so. Love the dinner scene. So many levels of a dinner featuring the manufacturing classes of mid-England and Victorian norms and etiquette. John has melted…. Nice! :D

  4. What an adorable letter, Grati. It´s a pity Margareth perhaps didn´t deserve it. She took a long time to discover what wonderful man Thorthon was.
    But regarding to the dinner scene, my favorite one it´s especially that , when John goes to greet Margareth and before he goes away, he touches her hands and slips his fingers so softy on her hand.This scene gives me chills every time I see it.

    • Hi Tereza,
      Thanks for your nice note. This dinner party scene is a masterfully created. The delicacy with which their clasped hands slide apart–reluctant to relinquish their only permitted form of intimacy. And it ends with John’s gaze as she departs from him, and then Margaret looking back at John over her shoulder as Mr. Bell walks her away. Even then, I think we have an inkling that Margaret was beginning to care for John–even if she didn’t realize it.
      Cheers! Grati ;->
