Author’s Mature Content Note:  “Fire & Ice” is a romantic thriller.  As such there will be some passages in this story involving heartfelt love scenes and some passages involving intrigue and some violence.  I will label those chapters accordingly.  If you are unable or unwilling to attend a movie with the ratings I provide, then please don’t read those chapters.  This is my disclaimer.

Author’s Story Recap:   Thomas and Caroline and their little son Trevor had managed to board a train late Monday night for the Northwest U.S.  What they will do once they get there is still undecided.  And their fate rests with finding out who is trying to get to them, and why.

“Fire & Ice”, Chapter 34:  Thomas and Caroline Awaken to Tend to Trevor’s Needs Tuesday Morning

Parents lives are ruled by their children’s schedules and potty needs.  The same is true for Thomas and Caroline with Trevor—even though they are on the run.  About 6:00am Tuesday morning, Trevor nudges awake his Mommy and Daddy–Thomas and Caroline.  Both of them had fallen asleep at some point in exhaustion and stress.

Trevor:  “Mommy, we’re on a real train!”   Again, Trevor amusingly states the obvious.

Caroline:  “What?  Oh yes, Trevor, we decided to take a little trip.  Didn’t we, Daddy?”  She says nudging the still very sleepy Thomas.

Thomas:  Rubbing his stubbly chin, Thomas [(2) right] says.  “Yes, my boy.  Isn’t this a nice surprise?”  Thomas tries to say hopefully for Trevor’s sake.

Trevor:  “Oh yes!”  Trevor claps his hands together.  “But I have to pee!”  So, they open the tiny bathroom and help Trevor pee, and wash his hands and face, and brush his teeth.

Then Thomas and Caroline take turns having a shower in the bathroom slash shower stall.  Thomas doesn’t shave—his beard will grow quickly and serve as a disguise, along with him combing his long hair forward like bangs onto his face.  However, Caroline [(3) right] changes her look more drastically and she has Thomas cut her beautiful long hair into a chin length bob–making her look quite a bit younger, like a college student. Then they put on their clothes for the day—also making them look like twenty somethings with a young child.

Then, Caroline pulls out several useful items from the bag they retrieved from the storage locker—plastic rimmed reading glasses for she and Thomas, and for Trevor, a sun hat, a new sippy cup, and a half opened bag of pull-ups for Trevor.

Thomas:  “Caroline,” He marvels.   “Is there anything you don’t have in this bag?”

Caroline:  She looks up at Thomas and says soberly.   “Yes Thomas, answers.”   Thomas nods and he puts on the glasses she hands him.

Trevor:  “Mommy, why are you and Daddy wearing glasses?  And Mommy, you cut your hair?”  Trevor pouts and reaches out to touch it.

Thomas:  “Because we left our contact lenses at home.  And doesn’t Mommy look pretty with her new haircut?”

Thomas says this to Trevor quite naturally.  And Trevor nods [(4) right].  Thomas is getting better at responding to Trevor’s questions.  And, Trevor will have a lot of them in the coming days and weeks.

Caroline:  “Trevor, we’re going to play our pretend game now.  You remember, we’ve practiced it.”   She nods at Thomas and he raises his eyebrow.

Trevor:  “Yes Mommy.  My name is Billy Johnson in the game.”

Caroline:  “That’s right, Billy.  And Mommy’s new name is Julia and Daddy’s new name is Kevin. We’re the Johnson’s.  So, when we go to breakfast now, we have to all use our new names.”

Thomas/Kevin:  “That sounds great, Mommy Julia!”

Caroline/Julia:  “Thank you Daddy Kevin.”

Trevor/Billy:  “And don’t forget me, I’m Billy!”

They give their son a hug.  And hope that their little ‘game’ will work.  Thomas and Caroline will have to monitor the web later to see if there are any coded messages for them from the Division Team.  But, for now this little family troops down to the dining car for breakfast this Tuesday morning—with Thomas securely clutching their bag with $50,000 and their ids in it.

“Fire & Ice”, Chapter 35:  Tuesday Morning at the Division and Thomas and Caroline are no where to be found

When Thomas and Caroline’s Senior Analyst colleagues arrive in their Division offices Tuesday morning, they find a scenario that they have never had before—Thomas is nowhere to be found, nor is Caroline.  And Thomas is always the first one in every morning–as well as the last one to leave at night.  Since they are a tight knit group with predictable work patterns, they all know that something is wrong.  Martin as the senior SA–by age if not by years in this particular unit–calls them all [(5) below] into the conference room.

Allen:  “Martin, what’s going on?   Where are Thomas and Caroline?  Did the lovebirds sleep in?”  He asks this jokingly, but then his smile fades as he looks at the somber faces of his fellow SA’s.

Martin:  “As you all know, it is Thomas’ protocol to blind copy one of us on important and sensitive emails so that the Division can keep going if he isn’t here for some reason.  Thomas blind copied me on an email he sent to Peter Wendt last night about a man stalking their son Trevor and his sitter yesterday afternoon.   Thomas was asking Peter for protection for his family.   Now it seems that Peter is also missing as is Paul Foster.”  The SA’s all gasp and look at Martin with real concern in their eyes.  “What I am about to tell you is not to go beyond this room if we are to help save Thomas, Caroline and their little son Trevor.”  They all nod. “Mary, please fill us in with the latest.”

Mary:  “Early this morning, our agents found Thomas and Caroline and their son Trevor missing from her apartment—only a few clothes had been taken with them, but the apartment looked intact.  The same cannot be said for their neighbor and Caroline’s sitter’s apartment.  Mrs. Burns apartment windows were wide open, what had been her husband’s study which we were told had computers and surveillance monitoring equipment in it was completely cleared out of all items in it—not even a speck of dust remained—and Mrs. Burns was found shot dead with a bullet to her brain.”

Todd:  Everyone gasps, but Todd expresses their unspoken thoughts.  “Oh my god!   Are Thomas, Caroline, and Trevor alive?”

Martin:   “We don’t know.  And we hope whomever tried to either kill or kidnap them last night doesn’t know either.  It gets worse.  Thomas had invoked a special unit of his past field operative colleagues at the start of the troubles last night. But they never reached Thomas and Caroline.   The three men were found dead a half a mile from the apartment.  There was no attempt to hide their bodies—someone was sending a message. Though we don’t know who the dead men are yet.”   Seeing that no one is asking them why they can’t be identified—because all of them are analysts and Martin is the only past field operative currently in the room–he tells his colleagues why they can’t be identified.    “Their hands and heads were removed making identification nearly impossible.”  Everyone gasps and closes their eyes in shock.

Fiona:   “Does this have something to do with a project that we’re working on?  Or does it have to do with the conflict Thomas has with Paul Foster?”

Martin:  “We don’t know.  We’ll have to find that out.  Because until we do, none of us are safe.  We could be sitting ducks.  So, to help Thomas and Caroline and Trevor—and ourselves—we have to comb our databases of recent projects from the last three to six months to see if there is a connection between Wendt, Foster, and/or Thomas and Caroline.  We can’t rule anything out at the moment.  And, you should send your families into hiding so that you can concentrate on saving them and all of us.  So, invoke your secret family escape plans and meet back here after lunch at 1:00pm.”

Allen:  “I’ll stay this morning.  I don’t have a family yet.”

Martin:  “Nor do Mary and I.  But Todd and Fiona, we’ll see you after lunch.”   Todd and Fiona nod their heads and leave their Division offices and the building quickly.

Allen:  “Martin, is there anything we can do to help Thomas and Caroline?  I mean, we don’t know where they are.”

Martin:  “At the moment, unless and until Thomas and Caroline choose to contact us—and frankly, for their own safety, it’s better if they don’t contact us right now–we just have to do our jobs.  I’m having Bernie put some coded messages on some generic websites that anyone might visit on a random basis.  But if Thomas and Caroline visit those websites, Thomas will be able to decode our messages to him and decide how to act in the best interest of his family.  Also, I’ve copied Thomas’ email to me to all of us SA’s.  The man pictured in the message—who was seen watching or stalking their sitter Mrs. Burns and Trevor yesterday afternoon at the park—needs to be identified, found and questioned.”   Then he says portentously.   “If indeed, that man is still alive.”

Allen, Martin, and Mary head out to work on the most important project of their Division and their lives—helping save Thomas, Caroline, and Trevor, and themselves.

About Gratiana Lovelace

Gratiana Lovelace is my nom de plume for my creative writing and blogging. I write romantic stories in different sub genres. The stories just tumble out of me. My resurgence in creative writing occurred when I viewed the BBC miniseries of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel North & South in February 2010. The exquisitely talented British actor portraying the male lead John Thornton in North & South--Richard Crispin Armitage--became my unofficial muse. I have written over 50 script stories about love--some are fan fiction, but most are original stories--that I am just beginning to share with others on private writer sites, and here on my blog. And as you know, my blog here is also relatively new--since August 2011. But, I'm having fun and I hope you enjoy reading my blog essays and my stories. Cheers! Grati ;-> upd 12/18/11
