As you know, I am deeply immersed right now in writing my second North & South fan fic, “N&S: John Thornton, Love Lessons”. The exquisitely talented British actor Richard Armitage in a cravat or out of it always makes me swoon. *THUD*
And as I was trolling the web Monday for North & South picture resources of secondary characters Monday to help illustrate my story–I ended up popping in my copy of the N&S dvd (right, courtesy of RANet’s N&S resource page linked above) and capping what I needed myself–I came across the most stupendous resource:
The fully transcribed script of the BBC’s
2004 period drama North & South !!!
Lovingly transcribed by fans and shared by the Period Drama dot com folks, the BBC’s 2004 North & South script is separated into the same segments on the www.perioddrama.com site as on the dvd –the four episodes and then into each of their 8 parts.
This script gateway resource is a treasure! So be sure to following these Period Drama links to (see Period Drama’s N&S header image above):
The North & South script gateway: http://perioddrama.com/FilmScripts/North_and_South_2004/index.htm
The North & South key characters listing: http://perioddrama.com/FilmScripts/North_and_South_2004/cast.htm
And then don’t forget to check out their other wonderful resources at www.PeriodDrama.com !
P.S. 211 words. How is that for brevity? Snap! Ha!
This is wonderful! The people who did this have to be commended!!
I haven’t read it all but I just had to go and listen to Episode 4 chapter 8. Forgive me; I know I’m being rather picky here but the words John speaks were captioned wrongly on the DVD and it isn’t corrected here. The line in question occurs after she replies that she is going to London but has been to Milton. John actually says, “My guess were out then.” not “You’ll not guess where I’ve been.”; meaning he had guessed wrongly when he’d thought she might be in Helston. I know it doesn’t change anything but if you listen carefully I think you’ll be convinced. It’s just a little pet peeve of mine but I’ve listened to it so often I just about have that scene off by heart! :) I’m sorry if I come across as some kind of N&S “geek”, but I find what he says more meaningful somehow – well to me anyway!

Hi Tuechter,
Thanks for your nice note! The script transcript is a wonderful resource by Period Drama and the fans who transcribe it!
However, I must respectfully disagree with your hearing/translation of John’s line. I always hear: “You’ll not guess where I’ve been.” And I have also watched it thousands of times–literally. Ha! This line also makes more sense to me than the other line you suggest. And we are all “sister geeks” in loving Richard Armitage in “North & South”. Sighhhh!
Thanks and Cheers! Grati ;->
P.S. I just listened to that scene again and I still believe John says, “You’ll not guess where I’ve been.” Let’s give a listen to Darcywil’s video of that scene–the picture quality is a bit fuzzy, but the sound quality is crystal clear (and the kisses? *swoon* *THUD*, Ha!):

Ah well, Grati my dear, I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree. :) I did as you suggested and played it over and over – even doing so with good earphones on, the volume turned way up, my eyes shut so I wouldn’t be distracted by a cravat-less John! – and still can only hear five words and not six. I wish he had been facing the camera then we could have “read” his lips! *sighs at the thought!* Perhaps his “Darkshire” accent has something to do with it. What he says or doesn’t say isn’t really all that important nor does it detract from that whole scene which still has the power to make me weak at the knees. *swoon*
I “met” Richard through N&S so it will always be special to me as it undoubtedly is to you and many others. I can never get enough of it and always keep several copies of the DVD to hand in case of “emergencies”!! ;) Thank you again for sharing the info about the website.

Giggles about reading RA’s lips, Teuchter! I think I would get too distRActed. Sighhhh! Ha! And such a good idea to have a back up dvd copy of “North & South”–for emergencies. My sister broke my Downton Abbey dvd (she replaced it), so you can be sure that I wasn’t going to loan her my “North & South” dvd. Ha! Thanks for visiting and commenting! Cheers! Grati ;->

Would you believe I actually have FOUR copies of it? One of them is part of The Elizabeth Gaskell Collection that I bought some time ago from BBC video. So as you can see I’m a “belts *and* buckles” kind of gal! ;)

LOL! Teucher!
Four copies of N&S is dedication! And I will have to check out the BBC Gaskell collection you mentioned.
I’m not familiar with the “belts and buckles” phrase. Ha! What does it allude to?
Cheers! Grati;->

Forgive me! The phrase should read “Belts *and* Braces” which roughly means that you are making extra sure your pants/trousers don’t fall down! :) An example of this is in Spooks where Malcolm gives Ros and Harry not one but two or three different “trackers” on their person when they go to meet Muhammed Khordad so he can “see” where they are at all times! :) Does that make sense?

Hi Ania,
Thank you for your kind note! You’re welcome! And Kudos again to PeriodDrama.com and their transcribers for creating the N&S script and other wonderful resources for us!
John Thornton is also my first and favorite Richard Armitage character portrayal. Though I must say that his Thorin Oakenshield portrayal is a close second–with his Lucas, Porter, Sir Guy of Gisborne, John Standring, and Harry characters all having places in my heart.
Cheers! Grati;->
